The Electric Density Gauge (EDG) is a nuclear alternative for determining the moisture and density of compacted soil used in road pavements and foundations.

The EDG is a portable, battery-operated device that can be used anywhere without nuclear safety concerns and regulations.

User-friendly with its step-by-step menu, it guides the user through each step of the testing procedure and warns the user when values do not match the curves established for the tested material.

The easy-to-use EDG can serve as a construction assistant for monitoring daily compaction operations by providing performance and measurement results highly comparable to those obtained with traditional methods such as nuclear gauge and/or sand cone.

During a test, the EDG measures and displays results for wet and dry density, gravimetric moisture content, and percentage of compaction.

Non-nuclear density and moisture measurement is beginning to replace the nuclear method. It has similar sensitivity to the Sand Cone and other density measurement methods.

Working Principle

It operates by measuring electromagnetic waves taken from 4 metal pins. Voltage signals collect the waves, and soil conductivity and electrical resistance of the soil are used in calculations. Soil moisture, density, and results are measured and displayed on the screen. A temperature sensor is also provided with the device to increase measurement precision.
