Introduction
A gas pycnometer works by detecting pressure changes resulting from gas displacement by a solid object. The expansion of a known amount of gas into an empty chamber at a known pressure and the measurement of this pressure establishes a baseline. Then, a sample is placed in the chamber and the chamber is closed again. The same amount of gas is again introduced into the sample chamber at the same pressure, and the pressure is measured. The difference between the two pressures, combined with the known volume of the empty sample chamber, allows the determination of the sample's volume through the gas law.
The accuracy and precision of a gas pycnometer in determining density are good, but the method largely depends on the cleanliness of the sample material and the purity of the analysis gas.
