Vacuum Viscometer Bath

This test method covers the procedures for determining the viscosity of asphalt (bitumen) with a vacuum capillary viscometer at 60°C. It is applicable for materials with a viscosity above 0.0036 to 20.000 Pa·s.

The Testform Vacuum System (TVS) is designed to precisely provide a pre-selected negative pressure, specifically 300 mm Hg for ASTM D2171. The system offers a range of 20-320 mmHg [30-430 mBar]. An internal pump provides a vacuum that can be adjusted using the up/down buttons on the front panel. The nominal value is stored in memory and is automatically set when turned on. The internal pneumatic regulates the vacuum around this set point. In case of leaks or sound fluctuations, the electronic feedback system will maintain the preset vacuum. A simple menu allows for easy calibration for zero and range when a calibrated reference vacuum gauge is available. Through this menu, readings can be selected in mBar or PSI.

In asphalt laboratories, the TVS can be used together with Cannon-Manning, Asphalt Institute, and Modified Koppers Vacuum Viscometers for measuring high viscosity materials such as asphalt cement at 60°C (140°F) according to ASTM D2171. The TVS is also useful in other laboratory systems where accurate measurement and control of vacuum are required.

One of the main advantages of the TVS is that it takes up extremely less space compared to a few other vacuum systems available on the market, providing significant workspace savings. The system also offers high precision and feedback regulation on the vacuum. This control maintains the vacuum within 0.5 mm Hg of the set point.
