APPLICATION

This testing device is designed to measure the MFR (Melt Flow Rate) (g/10min) and MVR (Melt Volume Flow Rate) (cm³/10min) values of plastics according to ISO 1133, ASTM D1238, and ASTM D336 standards.

The melt viscosity of thermoplastics has a significant impact on the processability of plastics in applications such as molding and fiber production. Therefore, the measurement of melt viscosity plays a crucial role in research and quality control fields. Among the various types of such testing machines, the Melt Indexer is the easiest to use and is most commonly used for this purpose. It measures the volume (MVR) or weight (MFR) of the molten polymer extruded through a specified die (orifice) under constant pressure and temperature.

There are two types of test methods: Method A (Manual operation shortcut method) and Method B (Flow measurement method that automatically measures the decreasing speed of the piston). Method A is suitable for materials with a melt flow rate of 0.1 ~ 25 g/10min (ASTM method range of 50g/10min). Method B is suitable for materials with a melt flow rate in the range of 0.5 ~ 300 g/10min.

In this case, the number of grams of polymer extruded through the die in 10 minutes under a load of 2.16 kg and a temperature of 190°C is expressed as the Melt Mass Flow Rate (MFR). This value was formerly known as Melt Index (MI Value) or Flow Rate and Flow Index. The melt flow of plastics depends on the shear rate, but during molding, the shear rate is extremely high. Therefore, we must be aware that the result obtained may not necessarily correspond to the flow behavior in actual use. However, it is widely used as an effective tool for quality control purposes.
