Package Drop Test Device

Standard: ASTM D 5276

This test is designed to evaluate a container's ability to withstand sudden shock from free fall or its capacity to protect contents. It can also be used to compare the performance of different packaging designs.

Elements Evaluated by the Test

  • Durability of internal packages
  • Effectiveness of partitioning and cushioning arrangements
  • Product fragility
  • Drop loss height (can be used to indicate the maximum storage height of the product)

Test Method

Individual unit packages or secondary packages are dropped from different heights and orientations to evaluate durability. The test height is typically the expected height at which the product might fall in real life. Heavier packages are dropped from lower heights, while lighter products are dropped from higher heights.
