Automatic Scratch Tester - ISO 1518-1
Product Code: BGD 520-1
Application
ISO 1518 "Paints and varnishes — Determination of scratch resistance" specifies a test method to determine the resistance of a single coating or a multi-layer system of paint, varnish or related product to scratching under defined conditions, using a scratch stylus loaded with a specified load. The penetration of the stylus is through to the substrate, except in the case of a multi-layer system; in this case, the stylus may penetrate to both the undercoat and the intermediate coat.
This test has proven useful for comparing the scratch resistance of different coatings. It is most useful in providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels showing significant differences in scratch resistance.
Prior to 2011, there was a single standard used to evaluate paint scratch resistance; it was opposed to the scientific evaluation of the scratch resistance of paints in different applications. After this standard was revised in 2011, this test method was divided into two parts: One is constant loading; that is, the loading on the panels is constant during the scratch test, and the test results are expressed as the maximum weights that do not damage the coatings. The other is variable loading; that is, the loading applied to the stylus is continuously increased from 0 along the test panel, and when the paint begins to scratch, the distance from the starting point to the other point is measured. The test results are expressed as critical loads.
