Expansion Index Consolidometer / Expansion (Swelling) Test Device

Standard: ASTM D4829

Description

The SL204 Expansion Index Consolidometer is used to saturate a soil sample at 50% saturation and determine the swelling potential of compacted soils. The device compresses the sample in a 4x1 inch (102x25mm) stainless steel sample ring.

A surcharge load is applied and the sample is immersed in water for up to 24 hours, with volumetric swelling recorded. From this, the soil's Expansion Index (EI) is determined; a higher EI indicates a more expansive soil.

This standalone unit takes the soil sample, applies load, and saturates with water; no separate consolidometer loading device is needed. It is constructed of stainless steel with a corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum base and collar.

The SL204 includes a stainless steel sample ring, 12.6 lb (5.7 kg) loading weight, and two porous stones. A mechanical comparator (0.5 x 0.0001in) or digital comparator (0.6 x 0.0001in) is required for testing with this device and must be purchased separately.
