In a rheometer, during dynamic rheological measurement, a continuously increasing and decreasing strain is applied to a material within a specific frequency range, and the phase difference between strain and stress is measured along with the maximum stress value.

If the material exhibits ideal elastic behavior, the resulting stress is directly proportional to the strain, and the stress and strain signals are in phase.

The stress signal of a viscoelastic material can be divided into two components:

• Elastic stress, which is in phase with the strain.
• Viscous stress, which has a 90° phase difference with the strain.
