Determining Windscreen Fogging in Vehicles

Windscreen fogging

The fogging test is a procedure used to determine the amount of fogging on vehicle windscreens. Fogging includes residues from chemicals released from interior materials in the vehicle, which often accumulate on the vehicle's interior windows.

Fogging test instruments have been developed to test the fogging properties of all materials used in a vehicle, including the amount of volatile components evaporated from textiles, leather, PVC, and other polymeric materials. In addition to international standards, several vehicle manufacturers follow their own standards.

Windscreen Fogging

Fogging mainly occurs on the windshield of the car because of its position, which is colder compared to the rest of the car's windows, causing the evaporating materials to condense at a relatively high concentration on it.

To ensure driving safety and allow drivers to see clearly through the windshield, fogging that accumulates on the windshield should be kept to a minimum.

Fogging Test Instrument, EB 03C

Fogging Tester, EB 03

The EB 03 Fogging Test Instrument is equipment used to determine windscreen fogging in vehicles according to ISO 6452 and SAE J1756.

The instrument has a compact design with a heating bath and a cooling bath integrated into a single body. Two models are available for cooling the water bath:

  • EB 03C - With a built-in cooling system using Peltier elements.
  • EB 03 - Used with maximum 18°C tap water.

Different methods can be used to read the results. You can weigh the sample (gravimetric method) to determine the mass of condensable components. You can use a haze meter or a fog meter to determine the fogging value.

Standards

Fogging tests are according to ISO 6452, SAE J1756, and other automotive standards.

Temperature Range

  • Heating bath: +40 to +130°C
  • Cooling bath: +20 to +80°C

You need a 5-decimal place balance and aluminum foil disks (EB 03.09) to use the gravimetric method.

A haze meter (HACS-380) and a fog meter (HATH-100) are required to determine the fogging value.

Other vehicle manufacturers may use their own standards.
